WHAT TO DO?

The last couple of days I've noticed that birds having been flying around the upper back deck. They land on the railing and stay for a while. This is the deck that looks over the valley and the windows that I look out when I'm working from the office. It is fun to see the activity as I work but not what I saw yesterday!!!!

We have shades, that we pull down in the summer time, to block some of the sun and heat in the afternoons. Evidently this is a perfect place to "nest" and two birds have discovered it.

These birds were not one bit intimidated by me being out there. I was talking to Dale and he said "Mom you've got to get a ladder and scrape it down before they lay their eggs". The amount of grass and twigs they would come back with, in their mouths, was amazing. BUT.....I'm sorry, I do not want bird mess all summer long when I go out on the deck or look out the window. I kept putting off trying to clean it up and eventually the birds quit coming. When Bill came home from work I showed him and he immediately went and got a broom and swept it all off. He rolled the shade down and you should have seen all the debris that came out of it.

The thing that haunts me now is that they are back this morning but there are more. They've spread the word that someone is destroying their nests and I don't dare go out there. A friend called yesterday and I was telling her what was going on. Her comment was that it is too bad I don't still have little kids at home so they could see this and watch it all summer. "how fun" she said. I didn't tell her I was going to scrape it all down because she also mentioned that we would be accountable to the animals in the eternities. I'm all for being kind to animals but not at the expense of me living around a poopy mess all summer.

The poor birds are perched up on the shades right now, as I type, and I'm sure are so confused just thinking for sure this is where I built my nest yesterday. Now that I saw Bill use the broom yesterday, I won't let it get too far today. They'll just need to find somewhere else to follow their instincts. What will be will be and it won't be on my deck.

This gave me the willies just reading it. I hate birds, especially when I feel like they can attack me! They definitely need to go. Good luck.

I feel your pain. When we lived at the Bagley farmhouse on East Edison we had hornets make their home in the rolled up porch cover... and by the end of the summer, when we would put it down again as the weather turned cold, HUNDREDS of angry hornets would dump out as it unrolled!

I don't know how the top of tyour porch cover/roller looks, but you could try to deter them by putting spikes on top, which you would not see (much) but that would keep them from landing or building nests. Go to www.birdbusters.com/bird_spike for more info.

thanks Melissa. I wondered about putting something up there that they would not want to build on.

You know how much I LOVE birds Janet. I would be so scared out there trying to scrap the nest down. I would probably put Bill on day and night shift for a while. ha ha....

I think you two should rent the movie "The Birds," by Hitchcock. I think the name Hitchcock says it all. It's a scary movie of course and not one to watch when you're home alone.

I do think we have a responsibility to be mindful of animals but I don't think that includes living with them. This ain't the middle ages.

We have a cute little nest in our front tree, and we can watch the birds come and go and every year there seems to be a new family start right in our front yard. I love it and am mesmerized.....however, if those same birds were building on a shade that I use all summer long to enjoy my family, sorry little tweets, you have got to go.

I think giving Bill bird duty is a great idea.

I'm for the putting up spikes so they won't land there anymore... You see them do it on buildings all the time. I even saw it last month- up on top the anchorage Alaska temple....!
