We started the summer with two 4 inch tomatoe plants that we thought would never make it. They outgrew the pots we planted them in so I had Dale help me plant them in the landscaping where a few plants had previously died. I thought the wind would beat them up so we didn't put wire cages around them. They grew like weeds and sprawled across the landscaping. When it threatened to freeze a few weeks ago, Dale and Bill went down and cut all the vines off and put them in the shop. There were about 50 green, good sized tomatoes and we thought maybe a few would ripen. Bill got a recipe for 'fried green tomatoes' and we had them that night for dinner. (I'd have to be starving to try them again) Well, yesterday was garbage day and we decided we better go check on the tomatoes and get them in the garbage. Bill went down and called up to me to come down. I could tell by his voice that I was going to find something amazing - - the picture below is what we found. Half of the tomatoes had ripened on the vines. Now we know that next year we'll have tomatoes well into the freezing time. Who would have known? Another week and we should have the last batch ripened.

This tree, in the backyard, turns the most amazing colors in the fall. I love it!!!

Last night we had another amazing sunset and view of Mt Adams, right from the privacy of our back deck. We see this kind of sunset or ones similar to it on most clear nights. AGAIN I love it!!!

What a nice post Mom! That picture of the sunset is beautiful. Sure miss being home. Keep posting things like this... it reminds of the reasons why I want to be close to home once Scott gets a job.
Wow...isn't nature such an incredible thing? Few things make me awe in wonder the way nature does! Thanks for sharing.
Janet,
I have found that tomatoes, given a chance can survive a lot. With them being planted in your landscaping they were probably watered on a regular basis and were able to survive. I know you really like tomatoes a lot. (not)
The trees are really pretty. We have trees but they don't turn colors like the one you took a picture of. thank you for sharing. Jeraldean
Glad to see the tomatos made it. I figured that a few would probably make it, but glad to hear that the majority did. Very good post overall.
Harold just recently stuck a few tomatoes in a paper bag with an apple. Apparently the apple lets off some kind of gas that helps the tomatoes ripen. He just opened the bag a minute ago and declared, "it's working!" Harvesting home-grown produce is priceless.
Again, why do I love fall??? The colors!!! Nice post.
Loved your post!
