So this last Thursday we were driving to the airport in the early morning and this routine started before I could even get the car started. I told him to just chill out and we would listen to NPR. I knew "Morning Edition" was going to be on and I was hoping that they would have a story on that would grab his attention.
(As a side note, for those of you who don't know Dane well, his attention span is very short and so I knew I would have about a 15 second window before he would again start begging me to put in a CD.)
So first up was a story about doodling and how even some of the smartest people in the world like Bill Gates and Tony Blair have been known to doodle during meetings. At this point I am desperate for this story to end and another to start. Dane is getting anxious in the passenger seat, I can tell.
Next up was a story about Somali boys disappearing in Minneapolis. It was about 7 minutes long and the whole time I didn't even see Dane move. I thought he was asleep but every now and then he would exclaim something like "I can't believe they would just run away from home" or exhale at certain climaxes. At the end of the piece he just leaned back a little in his seat and in a humble tone said "Wow! That was a good story. This is a pretty good station!"
Mission accomplished. No more trying to get the other to enjoy their music. Now we know we have NPR in common.

I love this story. I can picture Dane with his iPod and you with your exasperated look.
Finally, a joining of the minds!
What station is NPR on here in Utah (don't tell Harold or Karen I don't know!)?
"Every time he [comes over], he wants to pull out his iPod and have me listen to a song he is sure I am going to like (which I don't)."
This is Dane in a nutshell.
LOL! My favorite comment was about the "15 second" attention span. :)
I know what you mean about siblings taste in music. Lucky for me I married someone who loves ALL music, so as long as I drive (which I always do) I can listen to anything and he is happy.
I haven't tuned into NPR, but I am finding myself more and more drawn to morning and evening news and I so enjoy the morning talk radio jabber on my portable.
I am sitting here with my arms in the air. YES! Another convert!
What a great story. You guys crack me up. I agree with Jeanna, I can totally picture this whole situation!
Three things...
1) Dale is way pickier when it comes to music than I am.
2)Abbie... how can you have your hands in the air and be typing at the same time?
3) Scott... you're a gangster.
cute story. I love hearing about your kids and their personalities, it's more info in the life of you and Bill. You seem like such a fun mom, I sometimes have a hard time believing you are a mom old enough to be a grandma, you seem so young and hip!
I love that Dedre thinks Mom is hip.
O.K. I have to claim ignorance.... Educate me....What is NPR? I am interested... BTY....Love your blog
